Dhira ayanamsa (based on the Uccha Sthana principle)

Quoting from J.N. Bhasin's book Sarvarth Chintamani. A question may be raised as to why a particular planet gets exalted in a particular sign and degree. So far as we are aware no author has answered this question.
Bhasin gives his ideas as to why the planets get exalted, but does not explain the reasoning behind the exact degrees of exaltation. Hereafter I will give my ideas.

Sun: attains maximum exaltation at 10 degrees Aries, this is the 9th house (Sun=father, dharma) from the exact position of Magha nakshatra in Leo, thus Magha star (the fixed star, not the nakshatra bandwith) should be in the 10th degree of Leo. Another possibility is that the star Ashwini is at 10 degrees Aries. Aries is also the starting sign of the zodiac, and the Sun is known as the creator, since without his blessings no progeny can be obtained. Sun is the King, the head of society, and Aries represents the head of the Kala purusha. Sun has his mooltrikona in the 5th sign, Leo, because the King's concern is to take care of his dependents.

Moon: attains maximum exaltation at 3 degrees Taurus, this is the 4th house (Moon=mother, mind) from the exact position of Dhanistha star in the sign of Aquarius, thus Dhanistha star must be at 3 degrees Aquarius. Taurus is also the mooltrikona sign of the Moon, and the Moon has its concerns in family life and food, function of the 2nd sign of the zodiac.

Mars: attains maximum exaltation at 28 degrees Capricorn, this is the 6th house (Mars=warrior, enemy) from the exact position of Uttara Phalguni in the sign of Leo, thus Uttara Phalguni star should be at 28 degrees Leo. Mars finds its exaltation in Capricorn, which is the camp of the enemy, 10th sign of the zodiac, representing action, and is in its own nakshatra. Mars's mooltrikona is in Aries, where the Sun exalts, and Mars's concern is to serve the King.

Mercury: attains maximum exaltation at 15 degrees of Virgo, this is the 5th house (Mercury=entertainment, learning) from the position of Rohini, the favorite star of the Moon, who is the father of Mercury, thus it is natural that Rohini star should be at 15 degrees Taurus. Here Mercury is also in own sign, the sign of intellect, in the nakshatra of Moon, which is also its mooltrikona sign. This is the 6th sign of the zodiac since Mercury, though the child of Moon, developed enmity with the Moon since he was conceived in an illegitimate way.

Jupiter: attains maximum exaltation at 5 degrees Cancer, this is the 2nd house (Jupiter=wealth, education) from Ardra star, in Gemini. Thus we may accept that Ardra star should be in the 5th degree of Gemini. Gemini represents schools and Guru is the teacher, who loves his students as a good mother (Cancer). Cancer is also the sign of Moon, who was a student of Guru. Guru has its mooltrikona in the 9th sign Sagittarius, representing his concern of teaching dharma.
 
Venus: attains maximum exaltation at 27 degrees Pisces; this is the 12th sign of the zodiac which represents pleasures in bed and the star Revati is equally representing sex pleasures, so Venus finds his exaltation in union with this star, which should thus be at exactly 27 degrees Pisces. In Vedic times, Revati was the reference star that indicated the start of the zodiac, since just after Revati nakshatra the zodiac starts with the sign of Aries. Ancient astronomers used Revati as a reference to determine the sidereal zodiac, unlike the present day Chitra Paksha zodiac. The mooltrikona of Venus is in Libra, 7th sign, which represents marriage and relationships, the abode where Venus has its concerns.

Saturn: attains maximum exaltation at 20 degrees Libra, this is the 7th house of the zodiac where Saturn attains its strongest Digbala, and the sign is the sign of the balance representing the judge of good and evil, which is exactly the nature of the planet Saturn. Saturn is the son of the Sun with the shadow of his wife, and is his enemy, so we see that Saturn's exaltation sign is the debilitation sign of the Sun. Then we may expect that the star of Visakha will be in the 20th degree of Libra. Saturn is the planet of expenses, and we know the place where the most spending and giving is happening is in the marriage life, unlike the 7th sign from it, Aries, which represents creating. But without gains no spending can be done, and thus Saturn's mooltrikona is in Aquarius, the 11th sign of the zodiac.

For Rahu and Ketu no exact degrees of exaltation are given, and their exaltation signs are Gemini and Sagittarius respectively. It could be that their exaltation degree could be connected to the centre of the universe, which is at about 6 degrees 40' in Sagittarius, since they represent the wheel of time.

Now if we take our astronomy books and calculate the exact positions of these stars along the line of the zodiac, we will find them at the positions as described here. Even if we consider Moola star to indicate the start of Sagittarius sign, as many ancient astronomers also used to do, we will find the ayanamsa value as I have calculated from my astronomy books (with some rounded off coordinates to the minute and for epoch 1950) of about 22 degrees 30 minutes. The value I have obtained from experience for 1950 is 22 degrees 23 minutes, which is very close and the difference may be due to some slightly different coordinates as given in the book.
